Crit

Last friday in groups of 6 we had a crit with Amber and Simon, we each took it in turns present the research work we had done so far and give a little talk about what you intent to be doing to take the project to the next step.

At this point I hadn't chosen a type face and so it was hard really for anyone to give me feedback, but I did show what research I've done and I got some helpful feed back on how I should present my alphabet. The work im doing is running along a native American sort of theme combining traditional native American patterns and some more contemporary pattern work of Kate Moross, I got some good feedback on how I could use the patterns in the letters so I can develop my ideas further.

3 things I look to change

Visual variation
Further typography research
Think about materials

Alphabet soup Part 1 OUGD403

I chose the word Boom for the 'randomiser', Immediately the first thing that comes to mind for me is explosions so this was my starting point. I didn't do too much research work into the word because I wanted to explore the possibilities of manipulating the letters.

I chose the letters that I did due to there shape, I went for the more angular letters like the K and M. I think they worked quite well with the word I was given. To start off I chose a heavy weighted font to use as my base Letters, I then manipulated them in illustrator using various different techniques trying to make each letter individual in its own way but still running along the theme of boom.

Once I had my group of manipulated letters i printed them out and traced them but with each letter I tried to use a different pen to achieve a different texture or look to the letter. Some pens worked well with the way the letters had been manipulated in illustrator.

I found this brief pretty straight forward but if I were to do it again I would probably spend some more time considering different possibilities in how to portait the word boom.

Study Task 2 - What Is Graphic Design? - Part 1

Creative use of typography

Alex Trochut
These are two examples of creative type by Alex Trochut, both quite different in style but you can see that they have come from the same guy.

Tony Ariawan

Rubens Cantuni

Graphithèque
This is a typeface created by a design studio, I really like the clever way they have introduced the different weights, by changing the complexity of the characters.

---

Simplicity

Ruedi Ruegg/Godi Frohlich
I really like the simple use of colour and placement of the words to give the impression of something thats not really there.

Greenpeace
this is a competition brief for Greenpeace to redesign the BP logo, I like it because its simple yet effective.

Stassja Mrozinski

Christopher David Ryan
I really like the creative use of the command symbol to make you think for a second what message is being said.

Invader
Ive always liked the work of street artist invader, the simplicity to them is really nice but its also the impact they have on certain spaces often you need to look really hard to see is art.

Personal interest
since last year on my foundation course I felt I wanted to expand into different areas of graphic design, I studied paper cuts for my final major project and I have really taken a great interest in paper cutting. I love the diversity that can be achieved in this one media.

Ingrid Siliakus
This is the work I based my final project on its by far some of the most amazing style of paper cutting i've seen, the technical ability is just amazing

Karen O'Leary
I love these paper cut maps, I think its a really good idea

Peter Callesen
I like the way he sates himself a boundary to work within, for example here only using the paper within the hand to create the skeleton hand coming out of the sheet.

Jen Stark
Jen Stark creates her paper cut art by layering coloured paper on top of each other and cutting into them  to create vortex like sculptures just out of paper.

Simon Schubert
This work is created by simply folding paper, when you actually see the image you can see the amount of depth a detail Simon Schubert achieves just by folding the paper in a certain way, the resulting images have a really eery ghost like appearance to them.

Detail

NIck White

Ugo Gattoni

Dimittiy Samohin
The tattoos that this guy does are amazing the level of detail and colour he uses is mad.

Blog group

This is notes of everyone in my blog groups 10 different things.

Sunday 30 September 2012

Identify 10 examples of design that illustrate your fields of creative interest?

1.
Ekta & Ollio
Every face on this is a different page from a book, its some street art that was created by Ekta and Ollio. This example of his work is pretty typical to the sort of work he shows in his sketch books. Its a very simple cartoony style that i find pretty interesting.

2.
Andy Warhol
I saw a whole series of the Marilyn Monroe prints in Manchester in summer. I liked the pictures before but seeing them up close made me really appreciate the prints a lot more. I really liked how you could see the different layers of the screen print and how each picture was slightly different in the placement of the screen.

3.
Logos
Ive always been interested in this area of design, I took this picture out of typography book and the logos above were designed by Julian Montague a New york based designer. I have designed a few logo for various different things like a clothing company and a night in Manchester.

4.
Ingrid Siliakus
For my art foundation final piece i chose to study paper cut art. I created several paper cut structures copying the style of Ingrid Siliakus by only using on sheet of paper and cutting it and folding out the cuts at a right angle. I really like the intricacy and the sheer amount of time that goes into making a piece like this. To make a piece like this there is a degree of maths involved, it took me some time to get my head around it.

5.
Seb Lester
Ive always been interested in typography and I especially like the work of Seb Lester. This was typographic 'sound effects' he created for an ad campaign. I like the flowing letters and lines he used in his work it makes for a really unusual font.

6.
Martzi Hegedűs
I find things that trick the eye really interesting, this was a typeface created by Martzi Hegedűs named Frustro. It gives a whole new angle to the classic illustion.

7.
Matt W. Moore
I found this guy whilst searching the internet, He uses colourful geometric shapes and lines to build up big images. His work varies from street art to advertising to logo design and band artwork.

8.
Dalton Ghetti
The scale that this guy works to is amazing, he makes his work by using a scalpel and and sculpting the the lead of a pencil into a object. The level of detail he achieves is ridiculous.

9.
Adam Beane
These miniature sculptures are hand crafted out of a material similar to clay called CX5. The image above is of the footballer Del Peiro. He makes a lot of sculptures for model companies but the level of detail he put into them is amazing.

10.
Simen Johan
Ive always been really interested in photography, I have chosen Simen Johan because i really like his work. His photos apear very surreal and dark and have a strange quality to them.

How To - Self evaluation

I found it easy to work with my group, we all gave suggestions towards the final piece and all had a role to play in the designing and presentation of the work.

It was good working within a group mainly due to the high volume of ideas generated and the fact we were all assigned a role and worked on it quickly within the time frame we were given.
