Last friday in groups of 6 we had a crit with Amber and Simon, we each took it in turns present the research work we had done so far and give a little talk about what you intent to be doing to take the project to the next step.

At this point I hadn't chosen a type face and so it was hard really for anyone to give me feedback, but I did show what research I've done and I got some helpful feed back on how I should present my alphabet. The work im doing is running along a native American sort of theme combining traditional native American patterns and some more contemporary pattern work of Kate Moross, I got some good feedback on how I could use the patterns in the letters so I can develop my ideas further.

I chose the word Boom for the 'randomiser', Immediately the first thing that comes to mind for me is explosions so this was my starting point. I didn't do too much research work into the word because I wanted to explore the possibilities of manipulating the letters.

I chose the letters that I did due to there shape, I went for the more angular letters like the K and M. I think they worked quite well with the word I was given. To start off I chose a heavy weighted font to use as my base Letters, I then manipulated them in illustrator using various different techniques trying to make each letter individual in its own way but still running along the theme of boom.

Once I had my group of manipulated letters i printed them out and traced them but with each letter I tried to use a different pen to achieve a different texture or look to the letter. Some pens worked well with the way the letters had been manipulated in illustrator.

I found this brief pretty straight forward but if I were to do it again I would probably spend some more time considering different possibilities in how to portait the word boom.

Invader

Ive always liked the work of street artist invader, the simplicity to them is really nice but its also the impact they have on certain spaces often you need to look really hard to see is art.

Personal interest

since last year on my foundation course I felt I wanted to expand into different areas of graphic design, I studied paper cuts for my final major project and I have really taken a great interest in paper cutting. I love the diversity that can be achieved in this one media.

I like the way he sates himself a boundary to work within, for example here only using the paper within the hand to create the skeleton hand coming out of the sheet.

Jen Stark creates her paper cut art by layering coloured paper on top of each other and cutting into them  to create vortex like sculptures just out of paper.

Simon Schubert

This work is created by simply folding paper, when you actually see the image you can see the amount of depth a detail Simon Schubert achieves just by folding the paper in a certain way, the resulting images have a really eery ghost like appearance to them.
